Welcome to Research Compliance
Research, a key component of measuring and evaluating outcomes, is a valuable tool supporting Kaiser Permanente’s mission to transform healthcare. However, before involving members and patients in research, investigators must know and understand the ethical and regulatory requirements. The following resources are available to support and assist KP Hawaii stakeholders engaged in research.
Research Determination Officials (RDO) Committee
The committee reviews research activities to determine whether they need review by the KPHI Regional Institutional Review Board (IRB). The committee consists of the Associate Medical Director of Research, the Research Administration Manager, and the Research Compliance Manager. Committee members can provide general guidance as needed and are the best resource for new investigators or investigators who believe their projects are exempt from IRB review.

Institutional Review Board (IRB) SMART IRB
The IRB is responsible for reviewing research activities involving (1) humans, (2) data or information about humans, (3) biospecimens, or (4) FDA regulated test articles. The purpose of IRB review is to ensure the activities meet ethical and professional standards and are compliant with regulatory requirements. The KPHI IRB:

Research Compliance Program
In addition to managing the KPHI Regional IRB, the program staff support (1) education and training in research specific requirements, (2) development of research specific policy and procedures, and (3) oversight and monitoring of research activities.
